Maine Gov. Janet Mills is under federal investigation after refusing to implement an executive order from President Donald Trump prohibiting male athletes from competing in female sports. Within hours of her defiance, the Trump administration took action by launching an inquiry into the legality of Maine’s policies.
The confrontation took place at a White House gathering of governors, where President Donald Trump called out Mills, asking if Maine would follow the federal directive. Mills avoided directly answering, claiming the state follows both state and federal laws. The president quickly warned that failure to comply would result in Maine losing all federal education funding.

Mills refused to concede, responding, “See you in court.” President Donald Trump responded that he welcomed the challenge, predicting a decisive victory and questioning whether Mills would remain in politics after her term.
Following the exchange, the Trump administration’s Office for Civil Rights announced an investigation into Maine’s education policies. Officials cited allegations that Greely High School has permitted male athletes to compete against female students, raising concerns over Title IX violations.

Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights, stated that Maine must comply with Title IX if it wishes to continue receiving federal education funding. He made it clear that taxpayer dollars would not support institutions that defy federal anti-discrimination laws.
At CPAC, President Donald Trump continued targeting Mills, condemning her decision to challenge federal law and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting fairness in women’s sports. The audience reacted with loud boos as he emphasized the consequences of ignoring federal mandates.
