Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has shaken up Washington by exposing wasteful spending, but its most vocal critics have a clear pattern: they’re the same Democrats who championed the expansion of the IRS to go after small businesses and middle-class Americans.
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana called out this hypocrisy on Tuesday, pointing out that the people trying to shut down DOGE’s investigations were the same ones who fought to add 87,000 IRS agents. These agents, Kennedy noted, were not aimed at billionaires or massive corporations but at ordinary citizens who can least afford the legal battles that come with aggressive audits.
Despite repeated claims that the Biden administration’s IRS expansion would only target the wealthy, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen admitted under questioning that 90% of the audits would hit Americans earning under $400,000. That means small business owners, gig workers, and middle-class families were the real targets all along.

At the same time, DOGE has revealed billions in government waste, including grants given to illegal immigrants, redundant federal programs, and money funneled into ineffective agencies. Instead of celebrating transparency and accountability, Democrats are attacking the effort, raising questions about why they are so desperate to keep government spending in the dark.

Kennedy pointed out that many of the loudest opponents of DOGE seem to have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. After all, Washington insiders have long relied on bloated budgets and taxpayer-funded slush funds. With DOGE exposing just how deep the waste goes, it’s no surprise that those benefiting from it want the investigations to stop.
The debate highlights a stark contrast: Republicans are working to cut waste and protect taxpayers, while Democrats are fighting to protect the bureaucracy that has burdened Americans for decades. As DOGE’s work continues, the efforts to stop it only make one thing clearer—some politicians are more concerned with defending government waste than with serving the people.
