An elderly Colorado man is reportedly living in fear after squatters allegedly took over his home in Colorado Springs. William Towns, 76, who suffers from dementia, initially invited a homeless woman into his home to help with chores. However, the woman quickly moved in her son and boyfriend, turning the situation into a nightmare for Towns and his family.
According to his daughters, the squatters have taken full control of the home, using the living room to grow mushrooms and engaging in underage drug use. Towns, who has lived in the house for 50 years, now feels threatened by their presence and is afraid for his safety.
The family has contacted the police numerous times, but law enforcement says that because the woman was invited into the home, it is not considered trespassing. The family is left with no choice but to start the formal eviction process, which is both time-consuming and costly.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family cover the legal expenses, which include an $1,800 retainer and hundreds of dollars in hourly fees. “We feel like we have no options left,” Towns’ daughters said. The situation has left the family feeling frustrated and helpless.
