Biden Official Under Fire For Alleged Hatch Act Violation On Pro-Harris Account

Commerce Department communications specialist Ethan Wolf is accused of violating the Hatch Act by managing a viral pro-Kamala Harris X account during work hours. A complaint filed by the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) alleges Wolf used his federal position to engage in partisan political activities, violating longstanding ethics rules.

Wolf’s account, initially called “Biden’s Wins,” shifted its focus to Harris’s campaign after Biden announced he would not seek reelection. FACT claims the account continued posting political content during government work hours, including a viral post promoting Billie Eilish’s endorsement of Harris in September.

The complaint also highlights instances of misinformation from the account, such as falsely claiming NFL quarterback Joe Burrow participated in a Harris fundraiser and misrepresenting attendance at J.D. Vance’s campaign event. These posts were flagged by CNN and PolitiFact as inaccurate.

FACT executive director Kendra Arnold emphasized the seriousness of the allegations. “This behavior is clearly prohibited by the Hatch Act,” Arnold said, calling on the Office of Special Counsel to investigate. The Hatch Act bans federal employees from engaging in political activities during work hours or while in government offices.

Wolf denies being the sole manager of the account but has not disclosed who else might contribute to it. Public records show Wolf earned income from Democratic Wins Media LLC, raising further questions about his activities while employed by the government.

The Biden administration has faced numerous Hatch Act violations, with officials like Karine Jean-Pierre and Andrew Bates previously cited for using political language in official communications. Critics argue these repeated violations point to a broader issue within the administration.

If the allegations against Wolf are confirmed, the case would add to the growing list of Hatch Act controversies under Biden’s leadership. The Office of Special Counsel will determine whether Wolf’s actions warrant penalties, as watchdog groups call for stricter enforcement of federal ethics laws.
