The training is being conducted by the US Army’s 7th Special Forces Group, known as the Green Berets. The sessions, held at the Luis Carpizo naval facility in Campeche, will run from February 17 through March 30 and will cover various combat techniques.

Mexican drug cartels have long been a major supplier of illegal narcotics to the US. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid responsible for thousands of overdoses, is often manufactured in Mexico using chemicals sourced from China. The US government has pressured Mexico to take stronger action to dismantle cartel networks.
Trump recently signed an executive order labeling Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. His administration has also warned of potential tariffs if Mexico does not intensify its crackdown. The agreement between both countries includes commitments from the US to limit the smuggling of firearms into Mexico.
While the US military has trained Mexican forces in the past, security analysts note that this mission remains focused strictly on instruction. Reports surfaced earlier this month about a possible American reconnaissance plane near Baja California, though Mexico’s government denied any unauthorized surveillance.
