Russia Blames Ukraine’s Allies For General’s Assassination In Moscow

Russia has accused Western nations of complicity in the assassination of Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia’s chemical, biological and radiation defense forces, following a targeted bombing in Moscow. The Kremlin criticized Ukraine’s allies for remaining silent after Kyiv claimed responsibility for the attack, labeling it a “terrorist act.”

Lt. Gen. Kirillov, 54, was killed along with an aide when a bomb hidden in a scooter detonated near his apartment. The explosion, described as highly sophisticated, was remotely triggered as Kirillov left the residential building. Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the incident, calling it a premeditated act of terror.

Ukrainian security services quickly claimed responsibility, stating Kirillov was a “legitimate target” for his alleged role in ordering the use of banned chemical weapons. “Retribution for war crimes is inevitable,” an unnamed Ukrainian official said, citing more than 4,800 incidents of chemical agents deployed by Russian forces under Kirillov’s command.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the lack of Western response, accusing Ukraine’s allies of “approving terrorist acts” by their silence. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned of “inevitable retaliation” and called the assassination a desperate move by Ukraine to shift focus from its struggles in the Donbas region.

Russia has reported that a 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the killing of Kirillov.

The attack has escalated tensions between Moscow and NATO nations, with Russia hinting that Western intelligence may have played a role in the bombing’s execution. Ukraine’s use of advanced tactics and the public release of footage showing the explosion have only added to these suspicions.

Kirillov, a key figure in Russia’s military hierarchy, had been sanctioned by the US and UK for his alleged involvement in chemical warfare. His death represents a bold escalation in Ukraine’s strategy, signaling an ability to target senior Russian officials far beyond the battlefield.
