Republicans Introduce Bill To End FACE Act Used Against Pro-Life Americans

Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, backed by 25 Republican lawmakers, has introduced a bill to repeal the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. The legislation seeks to put an end to what many conservatives see as the political targeting of pro-life activists under the Biden administration.

The FACE Act, which was enacted in 1994, has been increasingly used in recent years to prosecute pro-life advocates who peacefully demonstrate outside abortion clinics. Roy pointed to Department of Justice data showing that 97% of prosecutions under the act from 1994 to 2024 targeted pro-lifers, while only a handful of pro-abortion extremists faced charges despite numerous attacks on pro-life organizations.

According to Roy, the Biden administration weaponized the act to suppress free speech and intimidate those standing up for the unborn. He called for swift action now that Republicans control both chambers of Congress and the White House, urging lawmakers to ensure such federal overreach cannot happen again.

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is set to introduce a companion bill in the Senate, echoing Roy’s concerns and pledging to push for the repeal. Lee has been a vocal critic of the law, arguing that it oversteps constitutional boundaries and unfairly targets those with pro-life beliefs.

The repeal effort has gained support from several conservative organizations, including the Thomas More Society and Students for Life Action. These groups argue that the FACE Act was unconstitutional from the start and should have been repealed following the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson.

The proposed repeal is being supported by several prominent Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Andy Biggs of Arizona. They argue that the law has been misused to advance a political agenda while ignoring attacks on pro-life pregnancy centers and churches.
