Federal agents in Michigan arrested a man identified as a high-ranking enforcer for the Gulf Cartel during an immigration enforcement operation. The suspect, Melquiades Salgado-Garza, was taken into custody by Border Patrol agents from the Detroit Sector. Authorities say he has a history of serious crimes, including burglary, forgery, and multiple immigration violations.
The arrest took place amid a larger operation targeting illegal entrants with criminal backgrounds. In a separate incident, Border Patrol agents at the Sault Ste. Marie Station detained a suspected member of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan prison gang known for violent crimes. Officials reported that the suspect was attempting to reclaim a previously seized vehicle when he was arrested.
Another suspect, a Mexican national with a record of ten illegal border crossings since 1999, was also taken into custody. Agents from the Marysville Station arrested the individual, who is now being processed for removal.
Since President Donald Trump took office, border authorities have stepped up enforcement efforts. ICE and Border Patrol have arrested over a thousand illegal immigrants, focusing on individuals with criminal ties. The administration has prioritized dismantling cartel and gang networks operating inside the United States.
Reports indicate that cartel groups may be escalating their tactics, with concerns that Mexican criminal organizations could begin using explosive drones against Border Patrol. President Trump has officially designated these cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, a move that allows for increased federal action against them.
As enforcement measures continue, authorities remain focused on removing dangerous individuals from communities and disrupting criminal networks tied to illegal immigration.
