Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) defended Vice President Kamala Harris during a recent interview, explaining that her evolving positions in the 2024 race are a practical way to win the election, not a rejection of her progressive principles. Sanders addressed the topic during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press.
When asked if Harris has abandoned her progressive agenda, Sanders responded, “No, I don’t think she’s abandoning her ideals. I think she’s trying to be pragmatic and doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election.” He acknowledged that while they don’t always agree, Harris remains a progressive leader in his view.
Sanders praised Harris for advocating to make the child tax credit permanent and for pushing for the construction of millions of affordable homes. He called these efforts crucial steps in addressing poverty and the housing crisis in the U.S.
While Sanders admitted that many Americans feel the government is controlled by corporate interests, he believes Harris’ housing plan could have a big impact on alleviating the housing crisis, especially for working-class families.
Harris has also proposed price controls in the grocery sector, claiming they are necessary to prevent “price gouging.” These controls have drawn criticism due to the slim profit margins in the industry, with many pointing out that grocery stores operate in a highly competitive market.
Despite differences in their views, Sanders remains supportive of Harris, calling her approach “pragmatic” as she navigates the 2024 campaign.
