White House Blames Congress for Border Mess

White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain audaciously claimed recently that it’s Congress who is culpable for the border crisis that the president himself set in motion. The administration, in a blatantly obvious political sleight of hand, is attempting to deflect blame for an impending disaster at the southern border that it is fully responsible for.

Klain explained that Congress has not approved requested aid for securing the border with Mexico, saying the president has “asked consistently for more resources.”

Title 42 was implemented by former President Trump and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the very early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. President Joe Biden announced last week that the policy, enacted to protect public health, will end on May 23.

Klain is doing his best imitation of a Jedi mind trick in explaining away the disaster looming at the end of Title 42. He knows the American public is going to see the mess as yet another example of Democratic incompetence. Yet the White House is desperate to find someone else to blame except the one responsible.

Border officials used Title 42 more than 1 million times to quickly expel migrants without hearing asylum claims, but the tool is about to go away. That’s well known on both sides of the border, as some intelligence estimates say as many as 170,000 are waiting just south of the border for Title 42’s demise.

Klain, after deflecting blame away from Biden, admitted that border crossings are expected to triple by the end of May.

Moderate Democratic Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia parted ways with the president last week after his announcement. Sinema, chairwoman of the Senate Subcommittee on Border Management, argued that the action risks the safety and health of both migrants and citizens of Arizona.

It’s one thing to announce a plan and then acknowledge an outcome set in motion by the announcement. But it’s quite another to make the same announcement and then attempt to deflect the blame away from the obvious source of the outcome. President Biden desperately wants Americans to see the coming border crisis as something other than what it will be — a preventable mess with his fingerprints all over it.
