Former President Donald Trump’s preferred candidate for Arizona governor has prevailed in the state’s Republican primary, according to the Associated Press.
Kari Lake, a former news anchor who was endorsed by Trump earlier this year, defeated attorney Karrin Taylor Robson on Thursday.
While establishment Republicans had rallied around the moderate Robson in the hopes of boxing out Trump’s preferred candidate, Lake was able to edge her way to victory, winning by some 20,000 votes in an election that saw more than three quarters of a million Arizona Republicans cast a ballot.
In a statement after the election was called for her, Lake called her victory a “political earthquake” and said the establishment should take note.
“Arizonans who have been forgotten by the establishment just delivered a political earthquake,” Lake said. “This is more than election — it is a beautiful movement by so many people across our beautiful state to finally put Arizona first.”
Lake, who will now face Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in November’s general election, was frequently pushed by Trump in the lead-up to the election this week. Lake has echoed Trump’s belief that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him throughout her campaign, while her opponent, Robson, was unwilling to say the same.
“The voters of Arizona have spoken,” Robson said in a statement Thursday. “I accept the results, I trust the process and the people who administer it.”
Robson also said she hoped “our Republican nominees are successful in November.”
While Robson had secured a number of notable endorsements in the days before the election, including former Vice President Mike Pence, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, it was Trump’s endorsement that ultimately made the difference in the Arizona Republican field.
Trump’s endorsements for Senate, secretary of state, attorney general, House of Representatives, and the state legislature all won their Republican primary contests in the state.
In a post to his TruthSocial social media platform, Trump declared that Lake “will be a GREAT GOVERNOR!”
In a statement, Hobbs, Lake’s opponent in the general election, said the race was “a choice between sanity and chaos.”
