The Republican National Committee (RNC) announced that the convention will proceed as scheduled despite the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The incident occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump was shot in the ear by a gunman positioned on a rooftop. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by a Secret Service counter-assault team.
Law enforcement sources revealed Crooks used an AR-style rifle and was 200-300 feet away from the rally. Witnesses reported seeing the shooter and attempting to alert the Secret Service and police before the shots were fired. Despite the chaos, the RNC remains steadfast in their plans to nominate Trump in Milwaukee.
A senior Republican official told CNN, “The convention will continue as planned. President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States.”
The FBI is leading the investigation and is asking anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his condolences for the person who was killed and explained his injury. He stated, “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong… Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
Despite the assassination attempt, Trump plans to attend the upcoming Republican convention in Wisconsin. The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of the Secret Service and their preparedness for such events.
