Pence Chastises Fellow Republicans For ‘Attacking’ FBI

Former Vice President Mike Pence delivered a speech in New Hampshire this week amid speculation that he plans to launch a 2024 presidential bid.

During his remarks at the Politics & Eggs event, he referenced the controversial FBI raid of former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence and the subsequent backlash against the bureau by Trump supporters in the GOP.

“I also want to remind my fellow Republicans, we can hold the attorney general accountable for the decision he made without attacking the rank-and-file law enforcement personnel at the FBI,” he asserted.

Pence claimed that the GOP “is the party of law and order” and “stands with the men and women who stand on the thin blue line at the federal and state and local level.”

As such, he called on Republicans to halt any “attacks on the FBI,” comparing the recent rhetoric to the far-left anti-police protests over the past few years.

“Calls to defund the FBI are just as wrong as calls to defund the police,” Pence concluded.

While most of the backlash against the bureau has been limited to verbal criticism, some protests have sparked fears of violence against agents. Last week, police say a man armed with a nail gun and a rifle engaged in a lengthy standoff with officers at an FBI office in Ohio.

Reports indicate the incident ended when the suspect, identified as Ricky Walter Shiffer, was fatally shot by authorities.

GOP Gov. Mike DeWine reacted to the standoff several days later, asserting: “Anytime there is an attack on law enforcement, whether it’s local law enforcement, federal law enforcement, the FBI, DEA, this is something that is very scary.”

He went on to echo Pence’s firm stance against any threats or violence against federal authorities.

“It’s just a horrible, horrible thing,” the governor said. “We certainly denounce that kind of activity.”

In order to cool tensions and provide a full account of the FBI’s search of Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate, many Republicans — including the former president — are calling on the Justice Department to release the affidavit used to approve the warrant.

Trump addressed the “gun toting FBI Agents” who searched his home on Aug. 8 in a recent social media post, adding: “In the interest of TRANSPARENCY, I call for the immediate release of the completely Unredacted Affidavit pertaining to this horrible and shocking BREAK-IN. Also, the Judge on this case should recuse!”
