Manchin Calls Biden Border Move Frightening

President Joe Biden announced on Friday the revocation of Title 42, a health order issued by the Trump White House and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention used to rapidly deport illegal immigrants. Several Democrats joined the chorus of Republicans in criticizing a move they say will only exacerbate the migrant crisis.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) called the move “a frightening decision” that takes away not only an essential tool for the fight against COVID-19, but also in controlling the “unprecedented increase in migrants this year.” The reversal, which will take effect on May 23, removes the means of the return of about 55% of migrants at the border in February.

Manchin’s office reports that U.S. Customs officials had a record 1.7 million migrant encounters last year, more than quadruple the number in 2020. So far in 2022, Border Patrol officers are on pace to nearly double last year’s record.

Democratic Arizona Sens. Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema joined Manchin in criticizing the reversal. In a joint statement Friday, they declared that the lack of a plan by the White House risks the health and safety of both Arizona communities and migrants.

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) warned that the government “does not appear to be ready” for an explosion of migrants at the border once the rule is rescinded.

These Democrats are outliers in their party, however, as Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) reflects the majority when she bashes Title 42. In a Friday statement, the congresswoman slammed the policy as “racist and xenophobic” and credits it for “unspeakable hurt and harm on migrants.”

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) chastised the Biden administration for “a contradictory mess” in its COVID-19 response. While negating safeguards at the border due to what they call improved public health conditions, the White House is “clamoring for additional emergency funding” and continues delaying student loan payments.

If the migrant surge of the past year is any indication — and it is — this summer is going to see even more chaos on America’s southern border. A manufactured and wholly preventable “humanitarian crisis” will have Democratic lawmakers clamoring for open borders, and that will send more GOP supporters to the voting booth in November.
