Los Angeles Community Stops Suspected Arsonist As Kenneth Fire Spreads

A homeless man has been arrested after Los Angeles residents detained him for allegedly starting the Kenneth Fire, which erupted Thursday afternoon in West Hills. The fire has already burned more than 800 acres and continues to threaten nearby areas as officials investigate the incident as potential arson.

The fire began around 2:30 p.m. near Victory Trailhead. Not long after, residents in Woodland Hills noticed a man attempting to ignite fires with what appeared to be a blowtorch. Witnesses reported that he was riding a bicycle and carrying a propane tank. Acting quickly, members of the community tackled the suspect and restrained him until police arrived.

Renata Grinshpun, a local resident, described the group’s efforts to subdue the man. “A few gentlemen surrounded him and got him on his knees. They got some zip ties, a rope, and we were able to do a citizens’ arrest,” she said. One witness reported that the man insisted, “I can’t stop. I’m not putting this down. I’m doing this.”

The suspect was taken into custody on Ybarra Road and transported to the LAPD Topanga Station. While he has not been formally charged, authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. The area near Victory Trailhead is being treated as a crime scene as officials work to determine the cause of the fire.

The Kenneth Fire is one of several wildfires devastating Los Angeles County. Five major fires have scorched nearly 30,000 acres and forced around 130,000 residents to evacuate. The Palisades Fire has caused the most destruction, burning almost 20,000 acres and destroying more than 5,000 homes.

The crisis has been worsened by reports of looting in evacuated neighborhoods. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has arrested at least 20 people for looting homes damaged by the fires.

As firefighters continue to battle the flames, officials remain focused on identifying the causes behind these destructive fires and preventing further damage.
