Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has taken a bold step by filing articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris, accusing her of failing to manage the southern border crisis and covering up President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline. The charges come amid growing Republican concerns about the administration’s immigration policies and transparency regarding Biden’s health.
Appointed as “border czar” in early 2021, Harris has faced criticism for her handling of the immigration crisis. Ogles points to her September 2022 claim that the border was “secure,” a statement made shortly after Laken Riley’s alleged murderer entered the country illegally. He argues this demonstrates a blatant disregard for the safety and well-being of American citizens and a refusal to enforce existing immigration laws.
The impeachment articles highlight specific tragic events, including the rape and murder of Rachel Morin and the murders of Laken Riley and 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, all allegedly committed by illegal immigrants. These incidents, Ogles contends, are a direct result of Harris’s mismanagement and negligence.
In addition to the border crisis, Ogles accuses Harris of deceiving the public and Congress about Biden’s mental state. The articles argue that Harris, having met with Biden over 417 times since February 2021, was aware of his cognitive issues but failed to act. Ogles asserts that Harris has a “clear moral obligation” to invoke the 25th Amendment, as Biden is “no longer capable of discharging the duties of his office.”
This move comes as former President Donald Trump promises strict immigration reforms and mass deportations if he is reelected, similar to policies from the Eisenhower era in the 1950s.
The articles of impeachment reflect deep dissatisfaction within the GOP over the handling of border security and the administration’s lack of transparency about Biden’s health. The process is likely to ignite significant debate and scrutiny over the current administration’s leadership and policies.
