A group of House Republicans has launched an investigation into Joe Biden’s sale of almost a million barrels of oil from America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve to China.
Seven GOP House members wrote to Biden on Friday, demanding that the White House produce multiple documents describing the details of the secretive process leading to the sales to China and others possibly made to other “foreign adversaries.”
The probe is being led by Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) and is joined by Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Glenn Grothman (R-WI), Ronny Jackson (R-TX), Jake LaTurner (R-KS), Ralph Norman (R-SC), and Greg Steube (R-FL).
The scrutiny over the sales began earlier this month when it was disclosed that the U.S. sold the reserve oil to Unipec, an energy company under the control of the Chinese Communist Party.
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was created to protect America in the event of war, natural disaster, or other emergency affecting national security. The Biden White House announced it was selling off large portions of the reserve as a gesture toward reducing retail gas prices.
Critics responded immediately by saying Biden was exploiting the strategic reserves as a favor to foreign countries while ignoring the devastating effects of his administration’s crippling of domestic energy production.
Friday’s letter told Biden that his policies are damaging the nation’s energy independence and “benefitting our adversaries.” It said the president has decided to drain the reserves to historic lows “for the sake of political expediency,” damaging national security and ignoring any long-term planning to protect U.S. energy independence.”
The letter points out that the sales have left the strategic reserve at below 500 million barrels for the first time since 1986. Meanwhile, China reportedly has around 926 million barrels stored and continues to import oil from Russia and Iran to ease its domestic energy costs.
Rep. Jackson told the Washington Free Beacon that Joe Biden is “wasting our money and resources by sending oil that’s intended for emergencies to the Chinese Communist Party.” He also noted that in addition to the currently crippling gas prices, the American people will be the ones to suffer in the event of international threats or natural disasters while the reserve is in a depleted condition.
The letter calls for disclosure of all documents created at any point in the Biden administration that related to U.S. oil being shipped to “foreign adversaries—specifically, the People’s Republic of China.” It also demands that the White House provide an explanation of any plans it has to replenish the strategic reserve.
