Fox News host Jesse Watters and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) battled it out over Graham’s choice to introduce a federal abortion bill the same day democrats get bad news on inflation and stocks.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Graham introduced the Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act, a bill that would ban abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The bill makes exceptions for the statistically rare cases of pregnancy from incest and rape, or to protect the life of the mother.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on the same day of Graham’s press conference that inflation had increased 8.3%, more than democrats had projected.
Watters challenged Graham’s timing saying, “yesterday was the day they lost all momentum when this inflation thing punched them right in the face, and you gave them an out.”
With the midterms only eight weeks away, Graham’s announcement feeds into the Democrat’s narrative that Republicans will seek a nationwide abortion ban following the Supreme Court’s Dobbs Decision, which struck down Roe v. Wade.
Americans have faced challenges throughout President Biden’s term. High gas prices, red hot inflation, and a plummeting market give Republicans plenty of ammo for attacking Biden. Graham’s bill, however, has turned media coverage to the abortion issue.
Watters pressed Graham, asking “why’d you do it on that day? Not great timing — don’t you see that?” Graham punched back, saying that he is proudly pro-life and that there “is no bad time to defend the unborn.”
While Graham’s memorable rebuttals will play well with the Republican base, Watters and analysts are concerned that the majority of Americans don’t support a national abortion ban.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made his case to voters at his own press conference on Tuesday: “If you want to protect the right to choose, and you want to protect a woman’s right to health care, vote for more Democratic senators. You want to have a nationwide abortion ban? Vote for MAGA Republicans.”
