Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), an ardent supporter of President Donald Trump, recently presented a bold strategy to confront Special Counsel Jack Smith’s politically tinged investigations against Trump. Gaetz’s plan involves demanding that Smith provide a transcribed interview before the House Judiciary Committee within the next 15 days.
“If he does not do that, we should send a subpoena,” Gaetz firmly stated. Gaetz’s strategy hinges on a severe consequence if Smith fails to comply: “If he ignores the subpoena, we should hold him in criminal contempt of the Congress so that he is the first prosecutor in American history to be prosecuting a case while himself under criminal contempt.”

Gaetz’s stance is no surprise to anyone familiar with his strong support for Trump and his commitment to fair and equal treatment under the law. He is not alone in criticizing what he perceives as a witch hunt against Trump. The Florida Republican and other GOP leaders contend that this investigation is a concerted effort to derail the former president’s chances ahead of the 2024 election.
Attorney General Merrick Garland was not spared from Gaetz’s call for justice. Gaetz made it clear that Garland should hold Smith accountable, and if he fails to do so, he should face impeachment. “If Merrick Garland doesn’t enforce that criminal contempt, then we ought to impeach Merrick Garland,” he remarked.
Gaetz believes that this intense focus on Trump distracts from serious allegations against President Biden and his son, Hunter. “This is all an effort to try to distract us from the very real crimes committed by Hunter and Joe Biden,” he added.
Last month, Gaetz announced his intention to introduce legislation to defund Smith’s investigations into Trump. This announcement was made hours after Trump declared he was a target of the Justice Department’s investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol protests and alleged “attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.”
Whether it’s Gaetz’s call for Smith’s accountability or his move to defund investigations, the conservative lawmaker is taking steps to ensure a level playing field.
