Capitol attending physician Dr. Brian Monahan has medically cleared Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to return to work after his second freezing incident, blaming the bizarre act on his previous concussion.
The 81-year-old senator sparked concern on Wednesday after he froze while speaking with reporters in Covington, Kentucky. After staring off into space with a frozen posture and unblinking eyes for an extended period of time, McConnell was able to take a few more questions before being led away by his aides.

A spokesperson for McConnell later claimed in a statement to Breitbart News that he had “felt momentarily lightheaded and paused during his press conference.”
However, this was the second time that the elderly senator had frozen on camera this year, sparking calls for his resignation — with critics on both sides of the aisle arguing that McConnell was too old for the job.
“This man has clear cognitive impairments after sustaining serious head trauma from his fall a few months ago,” popular X account DC Draino tweeted after McConnell’s first freezing incident, adding: “It is clear that he should resign.”

Despite these growing concerns about McConnell’s health, Monahan has deemed the elderly senator “medically clear” for duty.
“I have consulted with Leader McConnell and conferred with his neurology team. After evaluating yesterday’s incident, I have informed Leader McConnell that he is medically clear to continue with his schedule as planned,” the doctor wrote in a release on Thursday. “Occasional lightheadedness is not uncommon in concussion recovery and can also be expected as a result of dehydration.”

The concussion that Monahan was referring to occurred back in March during a reception at a Washington, D.C., hotel. He was rushed to the hospital, where he spent several days recovering from the concussion and a fractured rib. McConnell then spent several weeks at his Kentucky home, where he completed an intensive home rehabilitation program before being cleared to return to work in April.
Critics on X, formerly known as Twitter, have condemned Monahan for declaring McConnell fit for duty.
“Capitol physician for Senator Mitch McConnell has determined he is ‘medically clear’ and gives a bogus excuse for why McConnell completely froze while speaking to reporters. Trust the experts, folks! Dr. Brian Monahan announced that McConnell’s freezing episode was due to ‘dehydration,’” wrote political commentator Collin Rugg, adding: “They think you’re dumb.”

“Here’s the zombie who gave Glitch McConnell a clean bill of health!” wrote podcast host Emerald Robinson, sharing a photo of Monahan wearing an excessive number of COVID masks.
