Democrat Congressman Argues US Should Arm Ukraine To Forward Leftist Politics

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) released a statement asserting that the United States should continue to offer military assistance to Ukraine because Russia does not push the same type of left-wing politics that America does.

This statement by Raskin was put out shortly after a group of 30 House Democrats, including himself, signed a letter calling on Joe Biden to engage in peace talks to quell tensions in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Raskin has since appeared to change his view on the matter, now writing, “I am glad to learn of the withdrawal of the letter of October 24, 2022.” He additionally argued, “it is a bad colonial habit to suppose that ultimately peace depends upon the wishes of the great powers,” and that “even progressive and liberal people can fall into this colonialist reflex.”

The Democrat congressman suggested that support for Ukraine is essential as Russia stands against leftist agendas, labeling Moscow as “a world center of antifeminist, antigay, anti-trans hatred, as well as the homeland of replacement theory for export.”

He additionally called Russian president Vladimir Putin an “imperialist” and “colonizer,” before attacking Russia and praising Ukraine as a free “democratic” society.

“Moscow right now is a hub of corrupt tyranny, censorship, authoritarian repression, police violence, propaganda, government lies and disinformation, and planning for war crimes…

In supporting Ukraine, we are opposing these fascist views, and supporting the urgent principles of democratic pluralism. Ukraine is not perfect, of course, but its society is organized on the radically different principles of democracy and freedom,” the statement said.

Some on the left have criticized Raskin ft for his pro-war stances, including journalist Max Blumenthal of The Grayzone:

Raskin is not alone in his usage of far-left politics to justify Western involvement in the Russia-Ukraine War. The United Kingdom’s Chief of the UK Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), Richard Moore, also faced backlash after he said online that “LGBT+ rights” are a huge priority in the conflict.

“With the tragedy and destruction unfolding so distressingly in Ukraine, we should remember the values and hard-won freedoms that distinguish us from Putin, none more than LGBT+ rights. So let’s resume our series of tweets to mark #LGBTHM2022,” posted Richard Moore (he/him).

Raskin’s statement indicated that he is now dedicated to having the United States support Ukraine until an unequivocal victory.
