U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is no amateur when it comes to declaring herself the victim of political rivals, and her reaction to an obvious parody account on Twitter this week is the latest evidence of her mentality.
Although parody has long been used to lampoon public figures of all types, Ocasio-Cortez bristled at the thought of a social media account being used to poke fun at her far-left ideology. Worse yet, she complained in a tweet, Twitter CEO Elon Musk had the audacity to interact with the unofficial account.
Despite the fact that the “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Press Release” is clearly labeled as parody in its handle and bio sections, the New York Democrat nevertheless determined that it went too far by skewering her congressional agenda.
“FYI there’s a fake account on here impersonating me and going viral,” she wrote. “The Twitter CEO has engaged it, boosting visibility. It is releasing false policy statements and gaining speed.”
Although she did not elaborate on what she believed should be done to remedy the perceived violation, she wrote: “I am assessing with my team how to move forward.”
Ocasio-Cortez went on to advise Twitter users to “be careful of what you see,” which is probably good advice whether or not an account is actively engaging in parody.
Her reference to Musk appears to be in response to a post in which the fake account tweeted about having a “crush” on the billionaire.
Musk replied with a fire emoji.
As might be expected from a parody account, Ocasio-Cortez’s recent criticism sparked even more mockery.
“I can’t believe someone would do that to us,” a tweet from the account declared.
In a subsequent post, the parody profile wrote: “After brainstorming with my staff — I’m going to push Congress to make it illegal to joke, laugh, or make fun of me. Parody should be illegal.”
It is worth noting that Ocasio-Cortez herself has a history of preoccupation with crushes, although in her mind she is the object of such imagined infatuations.
After her boyfriend received some online criticism for his choice in footwear in late 2021, she concluded that the only possible explanation is that they were jealous of him.
“If Republicans are mad they can’t date me they can just say that instead of projecting their sexual frustrations onto my boyfriend’s feet,” she tweeted at the time, calling them “creepy weirdos.”
