Air Force Cancels Drag Queen Event for Children After Rubio Complaint

The curtain has fallen on Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany’s plan to host “Drag Queen Story Time” featuring a local drag queen reading to kids at an on-base library. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) vehemently protested the “sexually charged” event and called for it to be axed.

Exactly one senator stood up to this.

With June being “Pride Month,” the headquarters of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe advertised the event last week. It announced drag queen Stacey Teed will read to children and urged them to “wear your brightest and most colorful outfits.”

The storytime event, scheduled for June 2 at a library on base, was announced on the Ramstein and Vogelweh Air Force Libraries Facebook page. It was timed to mark the start of the month-long celebration of diversity.

Rubio sent an open letter to Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall Thursday urging immediate cancellation of “this politically divisive event.” He further demanded “appropriate disciplinary action” against Drag Queen Reading Time’s organizers.

The senator called it “completely insane” for Ramstein AFB to use its resources in this manner. Rubio said it is “inappropriate” to have young kids in “close proximity” with grown-ups who are “intentionally and explicitly sexualized.”

Drag Queen Reading Time was subsequently canceled and the Facebook announcements removed.

The planned reading time followed an event hosted by Ramstein last June highlighting the book, “The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish.”

Rubio included the 2021 event in his letter to the Air Force. The senator said the book’s author claims he wrote it so children could discover drag and “get a little practice shaking their hips” to feel “fabulous.” That event apparently went through last June.

Of course, LGBT groups ripped the decision by the 86th Airlift Wing to cancel the program along with a separate drag karaoke event. A change.org petition was launched to have the drag queen library event reinstated.

The petition organizer describes herself as the spouse of a transgender wife.

Are we so devoid of threats that the military has time and resources to dedicate to events like these? Or, and this is more likely, are blindly woke decision makers allowed to run amok in the interests of “diversity” and “inclusion?”
